King Charles III ‘fears’ his past portrayed in ‘The Crown’ will ‘overshadow’ his ‘reign’

The Crown has reportedly sparked concerns for King Charles III as the new monarch ‘fears’ that the Netflix series will ‘overshadow’ the start of his reign.

During her conversation with Entertainment Tonight, royal expert Katie Nicholl said: “Certainly The Crown, along with the imminent release of Prince Harry’s biography, have been bumps in the road for the start of the king’s reign.”

But nothing that he’s not been able to overcome,” she explained.

“I think, in the case of The Crown … I think the concern, certainly by the king, is that the younger generation, the Netflix generation, may well tune into the series and not be able to distinguish fact from fiction and perhaps may base their opinion of Charles based on his past and what they’ve seen represented in The Crown,” Nicholl continued.

“I do know from sources close to the King that one of his fears is that the start of his reign might be overshadowed by the spectre of his past — and, of course at times, a pretty turbulent and troublesome past,” Nicholl shared. “And I think The Crown just goes to show … those fears weren’t completely unfounded.”

“But I actually think that Charles has probably escaped from this relatively unscathed,” she added. “The palace has chosen not to comment on the latest series of The Crown, and that they’re not going to get involved in it in any way,” the expert further continued.

She noted the monarch must be feeling ‘incredibly frustrated that he cannot escape from his past.

“I’m sure he’d rather be able to leave the past where it belongs, as people can escape their 25-year-old history, but not [when they are] the King when he was the Prince of Wales. He’s more documented than any heir apparent before him.”

“I’m sure by now he’s used to it and not prepared to give it too much attention but I think frustrated nonetheless,” she shared.

Imran Khan seeks ending contempt proceedings related to May 25 events

PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court to end contempt of court proceedings against him, while denying “willfully disobeying” the court’s orders related to the May 25 long march.

The apex court, on November 2, had sought an explanation from Khan on the events of May 25, 2022, related to the party’s first long march, during the hearing of a contempt of court plea filed by the federal government.

In its petition, the government said, “Imran Khan is making announcements to attack Islamabad”, which it claimed was a violation of a court order. It urged the apex court to direct the PTI chief to ensure the implementation of its orders related to protests and sit-ins.

However, since the PTI chair sustained bullet injuries in an assassination bid during his long march in Wazirabad on November 3, his lawyer, Salman Akram Raja moved the court for deferral of the proceedings, while the sought response couldn’t be submitted until today.

The 23-page response submitted via Khan’s counsel Akram Raja stated that the PTI chairman wasn’t informed about the court’s orders passed on May 25 and he didn’t disobey them intentionally.

Khan also stated that the Supreme Court in its order also asked Advocate Babar Awan to meet him, however, the administration did not facilitate a meeting.

Later, while participating in a ceremonial mangrove planting with other G20 leaders, reporters asked Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron if they had reactions to the Trump announcement.

The two looked at each other briefly before Biden said “not really,” while Macron remained silent.

Mobile users won’t be able to download Google Play Store services from Dec 1

ISLAMABAD: Mobile users will be unable to download the Google Play Store services in Pakistan from December 01, 2022 after the State Bank of Pakistan revoked the payment of $34 million to international service providers, it was learnt.

The SBP suspended the Direct Carrier Billing (DCB) mechanism, so payment of $34 million on an annual basis through mobile companies to international service providers, including Google, Amazon and Meta, etc, got stuck up.

Pakistani customers will now be forced to download Google and other international Apps for making payments through credit cards or debit cards only. But the credit card facility is limited to a certain number of customers, so the majority of mobile users may be deprived of downloading Apps from Google Play Store.

The Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and four cellular mobile operators (CMOs) unanimously wrote a joint letter to the State Bank of Pakistan on Friday, making a request to reverse its decision of revoking the DCB mechanism for payment of dollar fee keeping in view the liquidity crunch being faced by the country.

Top official sources confirmed to The News that Google services such as downloading Apps will be unavailable. They conveyed to relevant authorities that the outstanding payment of $34 million was due, so their services for downloading of Google App Store will no more be available if the outstanding amount was not cleared.

The four mobile operators sent a joint letter to the government, stating that the telecom industry is one of the biggest contributors to foreign direct investment along with other significant contributions in the form of tax, duties and other levies.

The role of the telecom sector in expanding the agenda of Digital Pakistan cannot be ignored. Pakistan’s digital transformation is intended to benefit all social and economic sectors and thus needs engagement and facilitation from all stakeholders.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) revoked the IT designation of telecom operators months back. It was further advised to route cases to SBP on a case-to-case basis for subsequent approval. Consequently, the mobile operators stated that they were facing severe delays in getting approvals, resulting in disruption of critical services as they support the company in managing IT and digital infrastructure to meet all operational requirements internally and servicing its customers billing management, fraud management software, Office 365, robotics automation software and software developers as well as payments related to digital advertising on big IT platforms.

The digital economy in Pakistan has a heavy reliance on international service providers for hosting on cloud platforms, licenses required for services/platforms, security features and in many cases technical expertise to upskill the local workforce to meet international standards.

All the major players like Google, Amazon & Meta, etc. are being impacted because of non-payment and are most likely to discontinue their services the impact of which will be reflected in terms of telecom and internet users being unable to fulfill their needs from digital platforms including digital banking, e-Commerce, e-Education, e-Health that uses cloud infrastructure and gets licenses for both applications as well as web-based platforms that are being badly impacted. Distribution & monetization of digital platforms will become extremely challenging considering lack of distribution support and interest from the market leaders like Google, Amazon, and Apple representing Facebook. Digital marketing is the most effective channel for all brands, products & services will shrink drastically or become unavailable, thus, impacting brands, services and products beyond the digital space.

“Any potential outage of such digital services due to non-payments would create a lot of negativity in the world about Pakistan in this age of social media and should be avoided at any cost,” stated the letter.
